Welcome and enjoy the fifth episode of TheEnglishStaffroom! Thank you for all your positive feedback during lessons!!! Today we will be looking at another of Frost’s poems Mending Wall under the prescribed text list for Area of Study: Discovery.
Mending Wall is an ironic poem about a man who builds a wall with his neighbour, while mocking his neighbour for building the same wall. The voice is imaginative and in stark contrast to the repetitive and archaic neighbour’s chant of; “Good fences make good neighbours.” The wall is symbolic for boundaries between people and ideologies and seem impossible for either man to cross. However, once again nature has the ability to destroy these barriers to leave gaps for men to pass through.
