Episode 2: An Artist of the Floating World’s setting and Ishiguro’s imagined Japan

Lecture 2 delivered by Catharina Simmonds of Mosman High School (2022) on the history of Japan in the lead up to World War II and the shifting values, attitudes and beliefs that occured as a consequence of the dropping of the atomic bomb. Rapid industrialisation, modernistation, Americanisation of Japan are discussed in contrast to to pre-war’s Imperialism, Nationalism, and Patriotism as well as the impact that this has on art, pop culture and ideas.
